Creating and editing question groups

Step-by-step instructions on how to create and configure question blocks within a block, for an exam

This article describes how you can set up question groups within a block for an exam, in your biz:Examiner authoring environment.

There are different options for how you can create a new exam. In either option, the ‘Exam structure’ is one of the steps to define the structure of the exam. In the exam structure, you start with creating and using the blocks to configure the settings for the questions, or for the question groups. Please see Create a new exam to get started with creating an exam.

About the question groups

Within each block in an exam module, you can organize a set of questions into question groups to define common settings and configurations for the question group for the questions, or for the participants’ experience. Please see Setup exam structure for more details.

One or more question groups per block are mandatory. Questions can be bundled into question groups. This can have a setting reason but question groups can also be used to visualize question groups to the participants. Question group title is optional. If the question group title is set, the related questions will be shown to the participants as a group with this title.

Select the ‘Exam Structure’ tab. When you create a new exam or a new exam module, one block is created automatically for you to get started. This block shows a default question group and the question source that you selected while creating the exam.

The changes in the question group settings apply only to the current question group that you open for its settings. To set up the same settings for other question groups, you need to define and configure the settings for those question groups either within the same block, or in a different block, by following the same steps.

Set up question group settings

Click on the ‘Settings’ icon for the target question group name. The ‘Edit question group’ dialog box opens.

In ‘Name of question group’, write the name of this question group if you want the questions inside this question group to be shown to the participant as a group.

Number of questions

In ‘Number of questions’, the ‘All’ setting is selected automatically. It means that all the questions from the question sources are part of this question group,

Clear ‘All’ and you see an option to write the number of questions that should be picked from the associated question sources, to be a part of this question group.

Shuffle questions

Enable this option to shuffle the questions within this question group. It means that the sequence of questions is randomly shuffled and shared with the participants every time the exam is shared with them.

Question order

If the ‘Shuffle questions’ option is not enabled, you can set up the sequence of questions as these appear in the exam.

  • Select ‘Sort by question ID’ to show the questions in the order of their ID. These IDs are automatically associated with the questions when you create these questions.
  • Select ‘Sort by question title’ to show the questions in the order of their title, alphabetically.

If you enable the ‘Shuffle questions’ option, then this ‘Question order’ setting is not available.

Set up the order of question groups within the block

When you see the list of question groups within a block, there is an option to set up their order of appearance in the exam, for the participants. There are directional arrows available next to the question group name and you can use these as below.

  • The first question group at the top shows the down arrow only. Click on it to move the question group one step down in the list.
  • All other question groups except the last one in the list show two arrows – one each to move the question group up or down respectively. Use these as required.
  • The last question group in the list shows the up arrow only. Click on it to move the question group one step up in the list.

Save the question group settings

Click on ‘Save’ to save the question group settings.

Add new question group

You can add new question groups in any block, anytime.

  1. In any block, click on ‘Add question group’.
  2. The ‘New question group’ dialog box opens.
  3. In ‘Title’, write the name of the new question group.
  4. Click on ‘Create’ to create and save it.

In the block, you can see that this new question group does not have any question source. You can define custom settings and configuration of this new question group as explained in this article. To add a question source, please see Create and configure question source, for detailed instructions.
